Louisiana cottage food rules in plain English

This is general information, not legal advice. Check your state, parish and local rules. Last reviewed Oct. 13, 2026.

What it is

Louisiana lets people make certain "low-risk foods" at home and sell them without meeting the state Sanitary Code's equipment and construction rules.

License or permit

No state permit or routine inspection is set up for home preparers. Sellers must hold a current sales tax certificate from the parish where sales occur.

Source

Sales cap

Gross annual sales must be under $100,000, effective Aug. 1, 2026 (Act 801 of 2026, HB 403). The earlier limit was $30,000.

What you can make

Baked goods, including breads, cakes, cookies and pies; candies; cane syrup; dried mixes; honey and honeycomb products; jams, jellies and preserves; pickles and acidified foods; sauces and syrups; and spices. None may contain meat or fish (animal muscle protein or fish protein), and foods with CBD are not allowed.

How you can sell

The law does not list where sales may happen. Home bakers of breads, cakes, cookies and pies may not sell to a retail business or anyone for resale, and may not hire anyone to help prepare them.

Labels

Every food offered for sale needs a label that clearly says it was not produced in a licensed or regulated facility. Unprocessed raw honey is exempt.
